M6toll Announces Changes to Toll Rates

Effective 6am, 23 July 2004, a discount toll will apply for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) using the M6toll of £5.11 + VAT day rate (£4.26 + VAT night rate). The discount period will apply until 31 December 2004.

Effective 16 August 2004, the discounted toll will remain in place for cars exiting via intermediate junctions*.

Effective 16 August 2004, the toll for cars and vans using the two main toll plazas will move to the standard rates.

Discount period offered for hauliers

Announcing the £5.11 + VAT day rate (£4.26 +VAT night rate) discount period for HGVs using the M6toll, MEL invited hauliers to an extended trial of Britain's first privately-funded toll motorway. The new rates, a substantial discount from current levels, are effective from 6am tomorrow, 23 July 2004 and will operate for an extended trial period until 31 December 2004.

Tom Fanning, Managing Director of MEL, said: "We have listened to the views of the FTA, RHA and other haulier groups calling for an extended trial period at a reduced rate to encourage HGVs to trial the M6toll. We're taking the opportunity to introduce the discount rates during the current period of road works on the M6, to further alleviate congestion in the region."

"This new price for HGVs is unbeatable value for money. We expect the haulage industry to welcome this move and look forward to seeing large numbers of lorry fleets using the M6toll. Major companies such as Parcel Force, TNT and Irlams already appreciate the benefits of the M6toll - and we'd love to see more hauliers joining them," he said.

Digby Jones, Director General of the CBI, welcomed the discount period for hauliers. He said: "This is great news for business. Now it's up to the haulage industry to rise to the challenge and make full use of this road, which cuts journey times and aids productivity particularly during this difficult roadworks period."

Introductory discount period ends 15 August, discount to remain for local car journeys
MEL also advised that it expects to reach its 10 millionth customer in mid-August, triggering the end of its introductory discount rates. On 15 August 2004 the discount period for cars and vans using the two main toll plazas will end. The tolls will move to the standard rates, as detailed in the table below.

However, in recognition of the importance of local support for the road, the discounted tolls will remain in place for local cars exiting via junctions other than the main toll plazas.

The following table summarises the toll rates (inclusive of VAT) that will apply from Monday, 16 August 2004:

The M6toll continues to make an important contribution to keeping the nation moving. A recent Highways Agency report revealed a 10 per cent reduction in traffic on the M6, and the freeing up of surrounding roads, due to the opening of the M6toll motorway.

"This is a world-class motorway, already providing around 48,000 motorists every day with a stress-free alternative to the M6, with shorter, more reliable journey times," Mr Fanning said.
