Students urged to apply for new Scholarship

MEL will be awarding 10 scholarships, each to the value of £2000 in September, to Staffordshire students who are going on to study mathematics, the sciences, technology or engineering to degree or equivalent level.

The scholarship is only available to pupils in Staffordshire schools, and will be awarded through an application process, which will be judged by a Midland Expressway panel. Throughout the application process, the student will need to explain what they intend to study and why, how the award will benefit their future studies, and their commitment to give something back to Staffordshire.

Tom Fanning, Chief Executive of Midland Expressway said: "I am very pleased to announce that we have entered into this partnership with Staffordshire County Council. Our business is located within the County and we wish to play our part in creating opportunity for our young people to develop their talents. Following the Government's recent decision to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance, we feel that this scholarship will make a real difference the local students and I call upon other businesses in the region to follow our lead".

"Following the Scholarship launch in November last year we have received very positive feedback from schools and students alike and we have started to receive application forms, but we would urge all eligible students to apply by the closing date of 10th May to be in with a chance of being awarded a Scholarship in September.

The scholarship is a joint venture between Midland Expressway and Staffordshire County Council. County Councillor Liz Staples, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: "This scholarship will offer a welcome financial boost to Staffordshire students on their way to further education, and we are extremely pleased to be working with Midland Expressway on this project. Investing in the talent we have in this county is key, both from an education and business perspective. By ensuring those who are successful in obtaining a scholarship commit to put something back into Staffordshire, we are making sure the county as a whole benefits from this fantastic scheme."

Further to this any student applying will have to ask their headteacher or head of sixth form to provide a supporting letter of recommendation direct to Midland Expressway. Those most likely to be successful will be students who show high potential to succeed and who will gain most from the financial award.

Applications close on 10th May, and forms can be downloaded from www.m6toll.co.uk.
