Lucky Staffordshire student Daniel Statham receives Scholarship

The students were awarded their £2,000 Scholarships at ceremonies at their respective schools.  The first of which was awarded to Daniel Statham at Kingsmead Technology College, Cannock on 4th January by Karen Lucas, MEL's HR Manager.

Daniel is studying Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies at Leeds University. Daniel chose this course because of his passion for aviation, having been a member of the Air Cadets since the age of 13.  He aims to become a pilot and after completing his degree wishes to pursue a career as a commercial pilot eventually becoming a first officer pilot for a European airline.

Mr N Pollock, Head of Sixth Form at Kingsmead Technology College said: "Dan is an exceptional student and was an outstanding member of our school community.  This is not only reflected by his GCSE and AS results but also that he was recommended to his peers and the Head Teacher to represent the school as Head Boy.  We at Kingsmead offer Dan our congratulations in winning this Scholarship".

Following the overwhelming response from students to this year's inaugural MEL Student Scholarship, the application process for the school year 2012-13 will be launched later this month.

Tom Fanning, Chief Executive of Midland Expressway said: "Our business is located within the County and we wish to play our part in creating opportunity for our young people to develop their talents. Going on to university or college is a huge investment especially in these difficult times and we feel that this scholarship will make a real difference to local students and I call upon other local businesses in the region to follow our lead".

Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins added:  "This scholarship is excellent news for young people in Staffordshire, and will give them welcome financial boost on their way to further education.  The essence of this scholarship is the emphasis not just on helping Staffordshire young people, but also what these young people can give back to Staffordshire once they have completed their education.  We are very keen to nurture the talent we have in this county, as well as ensuring the county as a whole benefits.  I want to congratulate Midland Expressway Limited for helping the county's young people, and echo their call to other businesses to follow suit."

Full details regarding the qualifying criteria and application process will be available on Midland Expressway's website www.m6toll.co.uk later this month.
