M6toll dive in with donation for Lichfield Swimming Club

Lichfield Swimming Club (LSC) have benefited from a £620 donation from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL); operators of the M6toll for new kits and swimming hats.

Members of MEL’s Social Committee recently visited LSC during one of their training sessions at The Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield where the youngsters proudly showed off their new kits and M6toll branded swimming hats.

Lichfield Swimming Club was founded in 1968. It is now a club with over 100 active members, with ages ranging from 8 years upwards. In recent years LSC has engaged in a programme of rebuilding under the combined efforts of the Club committee, drawn from the parents of swimmers past and present and a growing team of qualified coaches and teaching staff.

For the first time in many years, their junior squad has qualified for the Division 2 final of the Nuneaton and District Junior League (commonly referred to as the 'Diddy' League). After two victories and a third place in the three qualifying rounds they finished 4th out of 24 clubs, with the top 6 contesting the final at Wolverhampton Central Baths on Saturday 12th September. They have 31 swimmers in their squad, ranging from age 9 to 12 and train several times a week at Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield.

Jim Allen, MEL Finance Manager said: “I am very pleased that the social committee agreed to support Lichfield Swimming Club; especially with my daughter being a member of their junior team. I wish every success to the young swimmers who have trained hard to enable the team to reach the junior league final. This is a huge achievement for the club.”

Paul Bannister, Head Coach added: “We have been delighted with the progress of the junior swimmers this year, with their hard work, commitment and dedication in training really paying off and resulting in some fantastic performances. The team spirit has been superb and the swimmers are really looking forward to the final, which will be a day out for them to remember for years to come. We would like to thank MEL’s Social Committee for their generous contribution of the team kit and hats which the swimmers will be proudly wearing on the 12th September.

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the £20,000 Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
