M6toll team provides support to Hednesford schoolgirl

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) recently visited the home of Hednesford resident Paul Atkins and his disabled daughter Lucy to erect a purpose built cabin to house her adapted trike.

Lucy who is 16 years of age was diagnosed early in her life with cerebral palsy. This affects her balance, coordination and learning. For most of her life she has been in special school, and is under various specialists including speech and language and a Paediatric Physiotherapist for her poor balance, coordination and low muscle tone.

Paul Atkins, Lucy’s father said: “Lucy never goes out alone due to the dangers she faces and always has someone with her. She has never really been able to play out due to the risks of falling. She has grown up not being able to do the normal things that any other 16 year old would be able to do, including riding a bike.  I would like to thank MEL for their generosity in providing and erecting the cabin.  Lucy is very much looking forward as the weather becomes warmer to decorating the inside. This not only provides a safe and secure place for Lucy’s trike, but also houses her outdoor equipment.”

James Hodson, MEL’s Social Committee Chairman added:  “it was a pleasure to be able to visit Lucy at her home and see how happy she was with her new cabin.  We hope she continues to enjoy it for many years to come.”

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining £20,000 Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support. To register your charity or community project with MEL for consideration to receive fundraising or practical (volunteering) support now or in the future visit www.m6toll.co.uk for further information or telephone 0870 850 6222.
