M6toll dive in to support Tamworth Amateur Swimming Club

Midland Expressway Limited (MEL) were proud sponsors of Tamworth Amateur Swimming club's annual gala presentation evening on Saturday 7th February held at the Drayton Manor Tower Ballroom.

The club has been in existence since 1886. Today the club has around 250 members and teaches many local children to swim. It is run entirely by volunteers, many who have taken qualifications to teach swimming purely to help in the club.

The clubs annual swimming gala took place back in November last year, wherein all members aged from 6 to 16 completed in heats of backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly and freestyle.  MEL's kind donation was utilised to source medals which were presented on the evening by the deputy Mayor of Tamworth, Maureen Gant to all gold, silver and bronze winners.

Katie Joyce, MEL Social Committee Member said, "the club is extremely close to my own heart as my eldest daughter, Libbie (aged 7) swims for the club as did my husband, Andy when he was a youngster.  I was very proud to be able to advise the club that our Social Committee had agreed to donate £500 to the club as they provide such a valuable service to the local community in teaching local youngsters to swim."

Geoff Blake, Chairman of Tamworth Amateur Swimming Club added, “thanks to MEL's generosity we were able to source this years’ winners medals showing the clubs historical gold and blue colours.  It was such a lovely sight to see the youngsters be individually presented with their medals as acknowledgement for all their training and hard work which they have put into their swimming over the year.”

The clubs’ aim is to provide a secure and caring environment and to deliver structured teaching and training programs, which inspire and support pupils of all ages to reach their full swimming potential, develop life preservation skills and promote a lifelong enjoyment of the sport.

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining £20,000 Drive for Charity fund over the next 12 months.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
