M6 toll jumps in with donation to Lichfield Riding for the Disabled

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) visited Lichfield Riding for the Disabled (RDA) recently after providing them with £500 towards their new facilities at Coton House Farm Riding Stables.

RDA gives opportunities to those who have learning or physical disabilities to participate in an activity giving them a challenge, the chance to interact with other riders, form friendships, learn new skills, get physical exercise and most importantly, have fun.

The Lichfield RDA has been based at the home of Darren and Helen Martin for the last 20 years. Helen teaches the RDA Group and is an active member of the committee. During the groups time at Coton House Farm, Helen has never charged the group for the use of the facilities, equipment, time, staff, or horses, and the construction of the new stables and facilities are all to the cost of the Martin family.

The Group was recently visited by their President HRH Princess Anne. A renowned equestrian, the princess visited Coton House Farm to view their facilities in Whittington and to meet with volunteers and disabled riders.

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee member said: it was a great pleasure to visit Coton Farm and witness first-hand the fantastic facilities they provide.  It was also lovely to meet some of the volunteers and riders and their horses.

Debbie Hoskins Chairperson of Lichfield RDA added:  “The donation that the M6toll gave enabled Lichfield RDA to host a fantastic event for the patron of RDA, HRH Princess Anne. This brought together our riders - past and present, our brilliant volunteers who do an amazing job, week in and week out - and their families. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our group and the generosity and unstinting support of Helen Wakefield Martin and her family. The event was a true celebration and a resounding success; everyone was thrilled to meet Princess Anne who was so lovely and engaging. Thanks to the kindness of other supporters and those who attended we raised additional funds which will be used to further support the work done by Lichfield RDA.”

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining £20,000 Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support. To register your charity or community project with MEL for consideration to receive fundraising or practical (volunteering) support now or in the future visit www.m6toll.co.uk for further information or telephone 0870 850 6222.
