Soccer girls starLANDS a big cheque thanks to M6toll

As autumn draws in, Midland Expressway Limited (MEL); operators of the M6toll donate funds to Starlands St. Annes to purchase rain coats for their U16 team.

The all-girls football club started in 2011 -2012 with 7 girls who had never played before, with their main aim to have some fun whilst developing their team. The team now boasts 19 local girls whom are currently in their 5th season together in the Central Warwickshire Girls League.

The girls have been lucky enough to have been visited by Paul Merson (Aston Villa & England), Melissa Lawley and Laura Bassett (Birmingham and England) and Marieanne Spacey (Current England Ladies Coach) and were also featured on the BBC as ball girls for Birmingham Ladies vs Arsenal.

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee member said; “I was very happy that the social committee agreed to support Starlands FC, especially as there does not appear to be many girls only football teams locally. It is also a great way for the girls to keep fit and healthy”.

Simon Kirman, Starlands St.Annes’ Football Club Manager added; “It was fantastic to receive the support from the M6toll Social Committee. With this generous donation we have been able to buy rain jackets for the team and new playing shirts for the girls that have recently joined us. I was reading the Sutton Observer and saw the M6toll helping out with local good causes offering their support. I was amazed at how quickly we received support for our application, it enabled us to sort everything out for the start of this new season. We are very grateful and it was lovely that the committee sent down sponsors to watch the girls train. Thank you“.

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support. To register your charity or community project with MEL for consideration to receive fundraising or practical (volunteering) support now or in the future visit for further information or telephone 0870 850 6222.
