Midland Expressway Limited Chief Executive announces his plans to retire

Tom Fanning, Chief Executive of Midland Expressway Limited (MEL), operator of the M6toll, has announced that he will be retiring at the end of May.

The M6toll is currently the only user-tolled motorway in the United Kingdom.  The road bypasses the most congested section of the M6 and provides drivers with the easiest and most reliable route through the Midlands.

MEL was awarded the concession to run the M6toll in 1991 for a period of 53 years until 2054.  Over the past 14 years, Mr Fanning has led MEL from construction through to the provision of a world class tolled motorway which, since opening to traffic on 9 December 2003, has been utilised by over 170 million customers and is at the forefront in providing exceptional customer service.

Tom Fanning said: “I am very proud of what has been achieved under my leadership of the business. I leave it on a firm financial footing following the successful restructuring, with the support of our banks and with traffic numbers soaring.  The business is in good shape with a great team of people in place.

It has been a privilege to have been so closely involved in building the UK’s only toll road and it's been a great ride for some 14 years.”

A successor to Mr Fanning is expected to be announced later this year.
