M6toll find new pri'mate' at Twycross Zoo

Plans at Twycross Zoo to build a brand new Gibbon enclosure have benefited from a generous donation from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL); operators of the M6 toll road.

MEL’s £1000 donation will go towards the funding of the gibbons’ automated feeders in readiness for the major exhibit, due to open in November.

Twycross Zoo was founded by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans in 1963. Renowned as a specialist World Primate Centre consisting of a variety of monkeys and all four great apes, Twycross Zoo is also home to the UK’s only group of Bonobos.

Maxine Estevez, Social Committee Secretary said “Living locally in Tamworth, Twycross played an important part of my childhood; having spent many an enjoyable family outing there. I've continued this tradition with my own family too. It is amazing to have witnessed how they have expanded over the years and it is a real pleasure to support them with their future plans. I wish them all the very best.”

Dr Charlotte Macdonald, Director of Life Sciences at Twycross Zoo added, “We are incredibly grateful to receive this donation towards our brand new gibbon exhibit. The money will be used to pay for a special automated gibbon feeder that will be installed high up in the Gibbon Forest enclosure and controlled by SMS text message technology to randomly distribute food to the gibbons during the day and night. Gibbons naturally forage for food throughout the day looking for fruit, nuts, seeds and insects in the forest canopy, so at 7 metres high, this feeder will be situated at a realistic height to their natural habitat.”

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
