Unicorns Football Club? There’s nothing mythical about M6Toll’s donation!

Members of Midland Expressway Ltd’s (MEL) Social Committee along with Mel (their company mascot) made a very special visit to Wilnecote Unicorns Disability Football Club in Tamworth recently.

MEL, operators of the M6toll are proud sponsors of the team providing funding enabling them to purchase new kits for all team members and coaches.

Wilnecote Unicorns DFC are a locally run football club catering for young people with a range of disabilities. The club started from a project with Staffordshire FA Footballers Development Fund in 2013, their aim is to encourage participation in the sport amongst those with learning and physical disabilities.  The club gives the chance for young players, from twelve upwards to express themselves through football in a friendly non-judgemental organisation in a safe and positive environment.

Mike Stevenson, Wilnecote Unicorns DFC Manager said: “"The support from the M6toll has helped give our players an identity and the training kit is something they can wear with pride and helps develop their team spirit. The sessions provide people of all ages with disability the opportunity to take part in regular football training delivered by enthusiastic and well qualified coaches. Everyone involved is very thankful to the M6toll for their support"

Sheena Hawkins, Social Committee member said: “This club is close to my heart as my son is a member and loves the weekly sessions. These young players are absolutely committed to the club they look forward to attending every week. The kit will have a massive impact; it will create a sense of belonging, team spirit and to give ownership of the club to the players and volunteers who have helped make the club what it is.”

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local charities and community projects.
