M6toll keep things fresh with donation for military baker

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) recently visited ‘Kath the Cake Lady’ at her home in Birmingham after donating funds, enabling her to purchase new equipment for her kitchen.

Kath devotes her life to baking thousands of cakes every year from her tiny home kitchen which she then transports to injured service men and women in various MOD establishments around the country.

She builds up very strong bonds and friendships with the patients and they look forward to her visits, so much so that she has recently been nominated for a ‘Brummie’ award by Soldiers overwhelmed by her kindness towards them and their families; she has also previously been nominated with an award for her work by Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and has also appeared on SurpriseSurprise.

MEL were made aware that Kath’s equipment had become very tired over time and thus urgently required a replacement fridge to enable her to continue baking cakes for our injured troops and their families.

Kath was overjoyed with the funding provided by MEL and said “You cannot imagine the relief and joy to have the support of Midland Expressway Ltd. The fridge has seen better days and with this generous amount of money from MEL’s social committee I can ensure the cakes keep getting made and can be stored safely in a new fridge before delivering them to our sick and injured troops. Thank you all so much!”

Anne Messenger, MEL Social Committee member said: “Kath is a very special, humble lady who I feel privileged to have met. She provides a vital additional element of care, with her cakes – and presence - contributing to the quality of life of those wounded whilst they recover from their injuries. As a keen baker myself, I appreciate the time and effort this requires. Kath is a truly inspirational lady”.

Each year, MEL donates £50,000 through its Drive for Charity project. MEL's Social Committee works closely with members of staff to choose community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always looking for local charities and community projects to support.
