M6toll tune into Hospital Radio Stafford

Hospital Radio Stafford recently benefited from a generous donation from Midland Expressway Limited (MEL); operators of the M6toll to fund much needed IT equipment for the radio station which broadcasts to local hospitals and hospices.

Hospital Radio Stafford (HRS) began broadcasting in 1972 to a number of hospitals in mid- Staffordshire. Its small band of eager volunteers begged and borrowed various pieces of broadcasting equipment and received donated LPs and singles to help get the service started. From those humble beginnings, HRS began to gain momentum with more members joining, establishing a good rapport with the NHS Trusts which operated the hospitals it broadcast to, increasing its programme range and frequency of service.

HRS currently broadcasts to County Hospital and Katharine House Hospice in Stafford and Cannock Chase Hospital in Cannock, providing a published programme schedule operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

MEL were approached by their Secretary, Colin Smith, whom stressed that the studio equipment had become very tired over time and thus urgently required replacements to enable the radio station to carry on.

Colin Smith, Hospital Radio Stafford Secretary said: “MEL’s £500 contribution has directly funded the purchase of two new computers which are currently being installed in our Studios which will make a significant improvement to listener services. On behalf of the 38 volunteers who help to run the station I’d like to thank MEL for their generosity.”

Paul Parry, MEL Social Committee member added: “It was a fantastic opportunity to visit the studio and see first-hand what goes on behind the scenes. The team at HRS are truly ‘the voice of a friend’ to hundreds of patients and it is a real honour for MEL to be able to play a small part in ensuring that this invaluable service may continue”.

Each year, MEL donates £50,000 through its Drive for Charity project. MEL's Social Committee works closely with members of staff to choose community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always looking for local charities and community projects to support.
