Local students head to Cambodia with help of M6toll
Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) visited Fair Oak Academy in Rugeley this week after providing a donation that will enable students to participate in an expedition to Cambodia.
MEL operators of the M6toll proudly donated £1000 towards the expedition which will see twenty two students and two members of staff from Rugeley Academies travel to Cambodia on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition during the summer of 2017. They will be working on local community projects including assisting with essential building work at a school as well as a jungle trek and visits to the “Killing Fields”, S21 Prison and Angkor Wok Temple.
Principal of the academies, Mr Chris Keen, said: “all of the participating twenty two students are independently fundraising over £3,700 each, which is a huge commitment. Thanks to the generosity of the M6toll, their donation will go some way to helping them achieve this.”
He added: “Most of the population lives on approximately $1 (67 pence) a day, which has to provide all food, water and basic daily survival needs. An experience like this for our students helps them to understand the rich diversity of a new country, develop their skills in communication, teamwork and leadership, and offers them personal development opportunities to enhance their CVs as they leave sixth form and move into the wider world of either work or higher education.”
Becky Cowan, an Administrator at MEL said: “This project means a great deal to me as both my sons attend Hagley Park which forms part of the Rugeley Academies so I was delighted to hear that our Social Committee had chosen to support the expedition to Cambodia which will be such an amazing and educational experience for the students”
Each year, MEL donates £50,000 through its Drive for Charity project. MEL's Social Committee works closely with members of staff to choose community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.
MEL's Social Committee is always looking for local charities and community projects to support.
