Cannock Alzheimer’s Charity welcome M6toll donation

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL), operators of the M6toll had the pleasure of meeting with trustees of The MASE Group (Monthly Alzheimers Support Evenings) in Cannock.

The MASE group was founded in 2008 by Daphne Sharp and Elaine Dunlop; after having both experienced first-hand how lonely the life of a carer can be when a loved one is living with Alzheimers.

The charity holds monthly group meetings throughout Staffordshire (Haughton, Rugeley, Cannock, Hednesford and Stafford) where members can meet fellow carers; openly discuss dementia and build up support networks. The charity is run by 4 trustees, Daphne and Elaine, and their respective husbands Richard and Jim together with 34 volunteers. There are no paid personnel in the Groups and no core-funding.

In order to meet the demands of the running costs (£25k per annum), the charity have to undergo intense fundraising. MEL were approached to contribute towards one of their most successful fundraising events, the ‘Tribute Elvis Night’ and were delighted to contribute £250 towards making this event happen.

Daphne Sharp, Co-Founder of MASE said:

“We are delighted to have received some funding from M6toll’s Social Committee which will help towards the transport costs associated with each Group.”

Mick Deakin, MEL’s Social Committee Member added:

“I have been involved personally with MASE’s support evenings and I can honestly say it was a great pleasure to see my father (who suffers from Dementia) and my Mother (his carer), in an environment where they could enjoy themselves together. The dedication of the volunteers is second-to-none. This is such an invaluable charity for all those who suffer and especially their carers to give them that much deserved ‘night off’”.

This donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects.

MEL's Social Committee will be working closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the remaining £20,000 Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
