£4m investment bring up to 160 new jobs to Norton Canes MSA
Roadchef announces seven-figure investment in the M6 Toll service area February 2016 – Roadchef, one of the UK’s leading motorway service area (MSA) operators, has announced that it is investing £4m at its Norton Canes site on the M6toll – a move that will create up to 160 new jobs and see two new brands added to the site offering.
As part of the investment, the company has submitted plans to extend the main building at Norton Canes, which will increase the seating area by 70%. Following approval, work will start to build a new SPAR store – the first time a convenience brand will open at the site.
Additionally, Roadchef will introduce a new McDonald’s restaurant within the existing building. Based on the fast food chain’s successful new service initiative, customers will be able to use digital technology to select, order and pay for their meals. The company expects to see around 15% per cent more motorists using the site when the restaurant opens on 2 March.
While work is carried out, motorists stopping at Norton Canes will continue to be able to purchase from the world’s busiest Costa, which serves more than one million cups of coffee every year. The WHSmith store and Fresh Food Café will also remain open during the expansion work.
The expansion and investment at Norton Canes, which is located between junctions T6 and T7 on the M6toll, will create 120 new jobs initially climbing to around 160 in the summer. Successful applicants will join 220 other team members currently working at the site, who serve more than 77,000 customers every week.
Peter Watson, Site Director at Norton Canes MSA, said: “We know from opening SPAR stores and McDonald’s restaurants at other Roadchef sites, that they will bring more motorists into the service area. We pride ourselves in working with the local community and are delighted to be bringing up to 160 new jobs to the area. For anyone looking to begin a career in catering, serving thousands of customers every day here at Norton Canes presents a great opportunity.”
Simon Turl, CEO of Roadchef, commented: “This expansion is part of our strategic plan to provide the UK’s motorists with the best facilities possible when they stop during their journeys. Norton Canes is the only MSA on the M6 Toll and the significant traffic growth the road has seen in recent years has given us the confidence to make such a large investment in the MSA. We believe the introduction of a SPAR and McDonald’s will bring excellent benefits to the travelling public stopping at the site. We hope to have a decision on the planning approval very soon, so that we can begin work on this exciting development.”
Andy Pearson, CEO of Midland Expressway Limited, added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Roadchef to expand their operations at our Norton Canes service area. It is already a fabulous facility which is very popular with M6toll customers and this development will allow us to offer more choice and an even better level of service."
