M6toll funds art sessions for Tamworth based special needs group

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) visited a local group tailored to support adults with learning disabilities in Tamworth after a plea from the group leader for funding towards an informative art group.

MEL’s Social Committee jumped at the chance to support the group which enable’s members with sensory issues to feel relaxed, build confidence and gain important social skills. The group are forming friendships and are encouraged to express themselves through their art, bringing new ideas they want to try. ‘Uniquely Me & U’ was set up almost three years ago by Yvonne Sanderson (from Tamworth) to help her autistic Son and other adults with learning difficulties allowing them to socialise in a friendly environment, the group has gone from strength to strength receiving recognition from Tamworth Council who have invited the group to showcase their art work at Tamworth’s 700th celebration of Ethelfleda at Tamworth Castle on the 14th July.

Yvonne Sanderson, Uniquely Me & U Group Leader said: “We are extremely grateful to the M6toll for their continued support of our group, the additional funding for the art group has enabled us to be involved with the display at the castle grounds which all our members are extremely excited about. The donation to our group is allowing members to develop their art and social skills week after week, we thank everyone at MEL so much for their support over the last few years’’

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee Member commented: “It was a real pleasure to visit Uniquely Me & U and see the progression of all the members who are enjoying the opportunity to socialise in a relaxed and creative environment. The group is going from strength to strength and we are very much looking forward to seeing their fantastic artwork on display at Tamworth Castle in July”.

The art group is held at the Masonic Hall every Tuesday from 8.30am – 11.30am, for more information please visit: http://www.uniquelymeandu.org/
