M6toll provide funding for vital equipment for Battle Back Centre

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (operators of the M6toll) visited the Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall to present them with a cheque for £1,100.

Midland Expressway Limited’s (MEL) donation is to be used to fund a specialised mountain bike which will be used as part of centre’s recovery programme, providing sports and adventurous activities for wounded, injured and sick Service people from across the Armed Forces.

The Royal British Legion provided £27 million to establish and operate The Battle Back Centre, Lilleshall, as part of its commitment to support wounded, injured and sick Service personnel. The Centre exists to help people achieve their best possible recovery and either return to Service duty or to make a smooth transition to civilian life. All the activities promote self-confidence and improve motivation to aid recovery, with tailored programmes to help with both physical and psychological challenges.

The Battle Back Centre is funded and delivered by The Royal British Legion and led by world-class coaching staff, the activities are challenging, but safe and enjoyable. They include climbing, watersports, caving, wheelchair basketball, clay shooting and archery. All the activities build camaraderie with others going through similar challenges. The Centre has high quality residential accommodation for 24 people at a time, with 16 rooms fully equipped for those who need wheelchair access or have other requirements.

Alison Bates; Community Fundraiser at The Royal British Legion added: “The donation of £1,100.00 to replace one of our fleet of mountain bikes, ensures that the quality of the service we provide to injured, wounded and sick members of the Armed Forces continues at the highest level; giving them the best possible chance to aid their recovery.  We thank MEL for their generous support and look forward to working alongside them on future projects.”

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee Member added: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Battle Back Centre and witness first-hand the amazing support available for Service personnel. We hope our donation will enable the centre to continue with the great activities they currently have in place.”

MEL’s donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects. MEL's Social Committee work closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
