M6toll provide vital funds to Burton Prostate Cancer Support Group

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (operators of the M6toll) recently visited a Prostate Cancer Support Group based in Burton on Trent after providing them with a crucial £500 to cover the running costs of holding the group in the Medical education Centre at The Queens Hospital.

The Burton Prostate Cancer Support Group was recently formed to offer support to men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in the East Staffs and South Staffs region. The group started in March 2017 with 36 members and their 1st meeting was held despite the group having no funding.

Midland Expressway Limited’s (MEL) donation will enable the group to continue on a monthly basis, providing a lifeline to Prostate Cancer sufferers needing support; in addition they will now have a distress fund for support group attendees who have had an operation or recently attended treatment sessions.

Trevor Anderson, Chairperson on behalf of the Burton Prostate Cancer Support Group said: ‘Our steering group applied to MEL's Social Committee for an award of £250 to assist with the month to month running of this newly formed support group, we were amazed and delighted to find we had been awarded the generous donation of £500. This considerable award now provides the BPCSG with ever more scope to support its membership. Not only can the BPCSG maintain the group's well-being for 2017, we are now able to provide additional financial support for our members requiring occasional transportation to hospital, either for a member, or spouse when that need arises.  The BPCSG are indebted to the Midlands Expressway Limited for their charitable award.’

David Chalaye, MEL Social Committee Member added: “It was a real honour to be invited along to the BPCSG meeting and see first-hand the effort that is put in by volunteers to ensure there is a support network for people suffering from Prostate Cancer. Group numbers are rapidly growing which is testament to the great work being carried out by the volunteers, I hope the donation from MEL gives the group a great boost which it so greatly deserves.”

MEL’s donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects. MEL's Social Committee work closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
