Scouts benefit from cash boost thanks to M6toll

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (operators of the M6toll) recently visited 1st Cheslyn Hay Scout Group to present them with a much needed cash boost for their Scouts, Beavers and Cubs groups.

Midland Expressway Limited’s (MEL) donation of £500 was a great boost to the group who were in desperate need of a storage container to ensure their outdoor equipment could be kept secure.

1st Cheslyn Hay Scout Group was founded by Alan Carvey in 1969 who was once in the Scouts and decided that he wanted to give the youngsters of Cheslyn Hay the same opportunities he had; to develop, grow and learn life skills that would go on to serve them well in the future. Currently, 1st Cheslyn Hay Scout Group has over 40 members spread across the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers sections, which range in age from 6-18 years old. The group is run by a Group Scout Leader, 12 Group Leaders and 4 Executive Members, who all give their own time for no financial reward, which ensures that 1st Cheslyn Hay continues to be able to serve the local community. The group is currently located in a purpose built brick built scout hut after the previous wooden hut was raised to the ground by fire. The facility is now used by the Girl Guides and St. Marks Pre-School Playgroup.

Scouting offers challenge and adventure to 400,000 young people and 100,000 adults across the UK. They believe in helping Members fulfil their potential by working in teams and learning by doing and thinking for themselves. They give people of every background the chance to stretch themselves, learn new skills and make lifelong friends.

Bob Massey, Chair of Scout Group said: “1st Cheslyn Hay Scout Group has been running for 50 years and storage has always been a massive issue for the group, thanks to this funding from the M6toll we have been able to free up space for daily activities and store all the Scouts equipment securely. Thank you to everyone at the M6toll for this very kind donation”

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee Member added: “It was a real pleasure to visit 1st Cheslyn Hay Scouts to meet the youngsters and see how much enjoyment they get from attending the group and the life skills they are gaining from all the activities they are involved in.  I hope the group continues to go from strength to strength!”
