M6toll Secures Room Hire for Local Special Needs Group

Staff from Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) visited a local group tailored to support adults with learning disabilities in Tamworth after a plea from the group leader for funding towards the group’s room hire cost.

MEL’s Social Committee jumped at the chance to support the group’s annual room hire costs which will enable them to continue to meet now on a weekly basis. ‘Uniquely Me & U’ was set up 18 months ago by Yvonne Sanderson (from Tamworth) to help her autistic Son and other adults with learning difficulties allowing them to socialise in a friendly environment, enabling them to sing and enjoy music, promoting self-esteem and confidence skills.

Yvonne Sanderson, Uniquely Me & U Group Leader said: "We have been funding the group ourselves for over 18 months on a fortnightly basis and witnessed how our service users were enjoying the social interaction through music and were building friendships and confidence. We could see that there was a need for a weekly meeting, but we could not afford to hold it. The funding from the M6toll has paid for the room hire and allowed us to meet weekly and has taken away the uncertainty of keeping our group going. Many thanks to the M6toll for helping us!’’

Sheena Hawkins, MEL Social Committee Member commented: "it was a delight to visit Uniquely Me & U and see first-hand how happy it made them; socialising in a friendly and safe environment and enjoying music. These musical sessions really do bring out the best in

everyone that attends, it was so uplifting to see people of all abilities coming together and bonding through music".

The meetings are supported by the Options for Life team who help get participants to and from the venue. Options for Life is a non-profit charitable business who support people with learning disabilities to live their lives to the full and advance their personal development, enabling them to enjoy the same rights and opportunities as non-disabled people.

The group is held at the Masonic Hall every week for 2 hours, for more information please visit: http://www.uniquelymeandu.org/ http://www.optionsforlife.info/

MEL’s donation forms part of a wider initiative to support local schools and community projects. MEL's Social Committee work closely with members of staff to choose those community projects close to their hearts which will benefit from a donation from the Drive for Charity fund.

MEL's Social Committee is always on the lookout for local charities and community projects to support.
