April - June 2011

Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) today reported the average daily traffic figures for the quarter April - June 2011

Category Apr-Jun 2010 Apr-Jun 2011 Change on pcp
Workdays 46,606 40,903 (12.2%)
Weekends/Public Hols 30,194 26,075 (13.6%)
All Days 41,195 35,852 (13.0%)

Average daily traffic levels were 13.0% below pcp for the second quarter of 2011. As in the first quarter of 2011, the reduction was more pronounced for non-workday traffic.

Ongoing weakness in the UK economy and elevated fuel prices continue to have a widespread negative impact on traffic. The fall in average daily traffic on the M6toll also reflects improved travel conditions on the competing M6 following the completion of an additional section of hard shoulder running between Junctions 8 and 10a in March this year. Further extension of the hard shoulder running scheme has been approved between Junctions 5 and 8, with construction works set to take place during most of 2012 and 2013.
