Midland Expressway Limited (MEL) is a private company with the government concession to design, build, open and operate the 27 miles of the M6 Toll until 2054. After this time the road will be handed back to the government.
MEL appointed a consortium of mainly British construction specialists to design and build the M6 Toll. It was the largest UK road contract, worth £900 million.
Thousands of people from across the world contributed to the planning and implementation of the road.

Midland Expressway Limited is a member of ASECAP. ASECAP is the only European professional association of tolled motorway companies. It gathers and represents 121 organisations that manage more than 23,000 kilometres of toll roads through 16 European countries.
The cumulative experience of the various partners in the enterprise means that however unfamiliar the toll concept may be in the UK, the M6 Toll is in expert hands and run along tried and tested principles. MEL is 100% owned by the Macquarie Atlas Roads.

MEL has had a dual role; first, responsibility for building the M6 Toll; second; the smooth running of the road, toll plazas and control centre.
We aim for the highest standards, in safety, personnel, operations and maintenance of the road. We endeavour wherever possible to ensure we meet and/or exceed industry standards.
We expect our managers to lead by example, promoting a happy workforce - from Customer Services, who deal with all our customer enquiries and Tag account holders, to Operations who are, for example, in charge of gritting the road and keeping it free of debris. We also have a fantastic team of Toll Plaza Managers and Toll Assistants.
Our 24 hour control centre, based at Weeford oversees the road, reporting any incidents and ensuring our customers get to cruise through toll lanes easily.
Managing the road isn't just about maintaining it to high standards, it's also about encouraging customer satisfaction and loyalty. We have a 53 year concession to run the road and want the M6 Toll to be an example across the world of how a toll road should operate.
By the time we hand the road back to the government we want it to be recognised internationally as one of the most successful toll roads ever built.
