How to pay

Paying for your journey on the M6 Toll couldn't be easier

For each journey on the M6 Toll, you'll pass through one Toll Plaza, either on the M6 Toll, or at a junction. As you approach the Toll Plaza, you'll see a number of signs indicating how and where to pay. You can choose an attended or an automatic lane and pay by cash (please note that we do not accept 1, 2 or 5 pence pieces) or credit/debit card; you must have the correct change in all automatic lanes.

Using your credit or debit card is much easier than paying by cash and only takes about 5 seconds. There's no need for a signature or a PIN number, no surcharges are made and receipts are available. We also have dedicated card payment lanes. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Maestro cards and TOTALCARD and EUROTRAFIC fuel cards, but do not accept Solo and Electron.

You can also pay in advance of your journey using the M6 Toll Tag. It's the most convenient and easiest way to pay, and allows you to cruise through the toll lane without having to stop.

Canopy Signs and understanding the symbols

Each toll lane will display either a green arrow to show that it's open,
or a red cross to indicate that it's closed.

When you're near a Toll Plaza, you'll be filtered into toll lanes. Above each toll lane are illuminated symbols, indicating different methods of payment available to you. These symbols always appear in the same position so it is their relevant position which can help you to select your lane.

Please note that the way the individual toll lanes are operated changes and will not necessarily be the same on your next visit. This is because sometimes we open and close different lanes in the same Toll Plaza depending on how busy the road is or what time of day it is.
Once you've made your payment, the barrier will open, when the barrier is fully open a green light will appear and you can proceed. Not all lanes will offer all methods of payments, so some lanes will show different symbols at different times. Please make sure you choose the lane with the method of payment that you wish to use.
