It’s now 22 years since the M6toll opened and in those two decades a rich and diverse ecosystem that has developed along the motorway corridor. Now a strategic sustainability partnership with South Staffordshire College will champion biodiversity along the motorway corridor.

The  long‑term strategic partnership wwill be delivered through M6toll’s Drive for Charity initiative and will strengthen its commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental education across the region.

South Staffordshire College is one of the region’s largest further education providers. Its Rodbaston College delivers hands‑on, industry‑focused training in animal care, agriculture, countryside management and veterinary care, alongside a broad range of trade and technical qualifications.

The link up with the college aims to demonstrate the rich and diverse ecosystem that has developed along the motorway corridor. Together, M6toll colleagues and students from Rodbaston will undertake a series of conservation, monitoring, and habitat‑enhancement projects to better understand and protect the wildlife that calls the route home.

This year’s programme will focus on initial species monitoring, with students from Rodbaston’s Animal Management courses joining M6toll teams on site to:

  • Identify mammals inhabiting M6toll land
  • Install and monitor camera traps, with M6toll colleagues receiving specialist training
  • Conduct mammal and habitat surveys
  • Support conservation work around mammal passes
  • Carry out habitat identification and ecological assessments

Students from the college’s Countryside Management course will also begin work at the M6toll’s deer glade – a specially designed area that prevents deer from entering the carriageway while providing a safe, natural space for them. Their work will include cutting back vegetation, improving habitat structure, and creating habitat piles to support small mammals, insects, and other wildlife.

As part of the partnership, M6toll colleagues will also volunteer at Rodbaston Animal Zone, supporting the care and enrichment of the college’s diverse collection of species.

Maxine Bate, Communications Manager at M6toll said: “This partnership marks a significant step in our long‑term commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment surrounding the M6toll. More than 22 years after opening, the road supports a thriving ecosystem, and working with Rodbaston College allows us to deepen our understanding of the wildlife on our doorstep while supporting the next generation of conservation professionals.”

Jamie Cook,  Curriculum Manager at South Staffordshire College, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the M6toll on such meaningful, real‑world conservation work. Our students will gain invaluable experience in field surveying, habitat management, and ecological monitoring, while contributing to a project that has genuine environmental impact across the region.”
