Two members of our motorway operations team have been recognised for their swift response and professionalism following an unusual wildlife rescue on the network.

Michael and Aaron were alerted to a swan that had been spotted on the hard shoulder, posing a potential risk to both the animal and road users. Responding quickly to the situation, they attended the scene where National Highways supported the operation by implementing a rolling road block to create a safe working environment.

Fully trained and equipped with specialist tools from their vehicle, including a dedicated swan bag designed for the safe handling and transportation of large birds, the team carefully and calmly captured the swan without causing harm.

Once safely secured, the swan was transported to Kingswood Lake, where it was released back into a more suitable natural environment – watched on by a small group of curious deer.

Swans are powerful animals and can be challenging to handle, making this a complex task requiring both skill and composure. Michael and Aaron’s measured approach ensured a safe outcome for everyone involved, including the animal.

This incident is a strong example of the varied nature of situations our operations teams respond to every day, and highlights the importance of teamwork, training and partnership working in keeping the motorway safe.

A brilliant demonstration of safety in action and going above and beyond—well done to both colleagues for their efforts
